Clinical trials are integral to the development of new treatments, therapies, and medical interventions. However, the concept of clinical trials may seem concerning, complex and daunting to many. In this blog post, we’ll unravel the mystery surrounding clinical trials, exploring what they are, how they work, and why they are essential for advancing medical science and improving patient care.

Let’s start with the basics. What are clinical trials?

Clinical trials (also called studies) are research studies that rely on volunteers to help discover better ways to prevent, find, treat or cure diseases. They allow researchers to learn more about new drugs and are an essential part of improving health and medical care. Without these studies, and the people who volunteer to take part in them, many common medicines including aspirin, statins to lower cholesterol, and medicines for high blood pressure and diabetes would not be available today.

Next time you open your medicine cabinet or fill a prescription, think about this: Every drug goes through rigorous testing before they are approved and deemed safe and effective for people to use. None of those medications would be available without clinical research and those that participate.

It’s really important to note that there are laws in place that protect the safety and privacy of people who choose to participate in a clinical trial. Every participant is involved in a process called Informed Consent. Before participating in a clinical trial, volunteers will work with the clinical research team to review the study and acknowledge their understanding of the study’s purpose, procedures, risks, and potential benefits. Informed consent ensures that participants make voluntary and well-informed decisions about their involvement in the research.

Commitment to Diversity & Equity in Research

Historically, certain groups – women, people older than 75, and people from certain racial

and ethnic minority groups – have not been well represented in clinical studies. Volunteers of all ages, races, genders, locations, and ethnicities are needed in research. Each person is biologically unique. Different populations of people will experience the same health condition, differently.

Many of these groups also have a heavier burden of cardiovascular disease and risk factors. New therapies need to be tested in a wide variety of people to find out how well they work within the general population. If a drug is studied only in adult white men, the research findings may not apply to people of other backgrounds.

Diversity in research studies makes better medicine for us all. When a clinical trial includes a wide variety of participants, and in particular, when a study reflects the community most affected by the condition, the results can have the most benefit for everyone.

Phases of Clinical Trials

Once a trial is approved, there are four unique phases, each designed to address different research questions and objectives.

Phase I: Phase I trials involve a small number of healthy volunteers and focus on assessing the safety of the intervention, determining the appropriate dosage, and identifying potential side effects.

Phase II: Phase II trials expand the study to include a larger group of patients with the target condition. These trials aim to evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention and further assess its safety profile.

Phase III: Phase III trials involve a larger and more diverse population of patients and compare the new intervention with existing standard treatments or a placebo (inactive substance). These trials provide critical data on the intervention’s efficacy, safety, and potential benefits compared to current options.

Phase IV: Also known as post-marketing surveillance studies, Phase IV trials occur after the intervention has been approved for use by regulatory authorities. These studies monitor the intervention’s long-term safety and effectiveness in real-world settings.
